The Main Lesson

Each morning begins with our Main Lesson — an extended, focused learning time where students dive deeply into a subject such as history, science, math, or language arts.

During Main Lesson, students actively engage with the topic in many ways:

Reading and listening to rich stories and source material

Writing summaries, reports, and creative pieces

Practicing math concepts and problem-solving

Drawing, painting, and illustrating their learning

Acting out scenes, reciting poetry, or participating in class plays

Discussing ideas and asking questions

Creating their own beautifully illustrated Main Lesson Books

This combination of academic work, art, movement, and discussion helps students understand topics deeply and remember what they learn.

Mathematics in the Upper Grades

Beginning in the middle grades, mathematics is taught both within main lesson blocks and as a regular stand-alone subject throughout the week.

This allows students to:

Practice skills consistently

Regular reinforcement builds mastery

Build accuracy and fluency

Speed and precision grow with practice

Strengthen mental math

Problem-solving becomes intuitive

Develop confidence

Success with advanced concepts

Main lesson blocks may introduce new mathematical themes such as geometry, business math, or algebraic thinking, while separate math lessons provide ongoing practice and reinforcement.

Technology is introduced thoughtfully and developmentally, honoring the needs of the growing child.

Learning That Is Lived, Not Added On

At Mindful Journey Academy, programs like mindfulness, movement, equine learning, gardening, and handwork are not add-ons.

They are integral to how children learn.

Academic concepts are reinforced through:

Movement and physical experience

Artistic expression and storytelling

Practical responsibility and real-world tasks

Social interaction and emotional awareness

This integrated approach strengthens understanding, retention, and confidence — while honoring each child's developmental stage.

Mindfulness & Emotional Skills

Be heard. Be supported. Be you.

At Mindful Journey Academy, emotional development is an essential part of whole-child education. Students participate regularly in guided mindfulness and emotional-skills sessions during the school day, providing a safe space to explore feelings, build communication skills, and strengthen healthy peer relationships.

Exploring feelings in a safe, nonjudgmental space

Learning calming tools and problem-solving strategies

Building confidence and clear communication

Strengthening social skills and peer relationships

Understanding and managing "big feelings"

Practicing respectful boundary-setting

Sessions are led by Madeline Sheets, LMHC, LPC, a licensed mental health professional experienced in working with children. These sessions are educational and community-based, designed to support all students in developing emotional awareness and healthy relationships — not therapy, but skill-building that benefits the whole child.

Amazing Athletes & Movement

Movement, confidence, and joyful physical learning

We partner with Amazing Athletes to bring engaging, movement-based classes into our curriculum. Physical activity supports strength, coordination, confidence, cooperation, and resilience — all essential parts of whole-child development. Each month, students are introduced to a new sport, learning its basic skills, rules, and strategies through practice and play. Along the way, they also explore which muscle groups they are using, helping them build body awareness and understand how movement supports overall health.

Spring Pentathlon

This year, we are partnering with Mr. Robbie from Amazing Athletes to bring an exciting Pentathlon experience to our students in the spring.

Students will practice events such as:

  • Discus throw
  • Javelin
  • Running long jump
  • Races
  • Wrestling

We hope to invite other schools to join us for a joyful, collaborative athletic celebration that emphasizes sportsmanship, courage, and fun.

Once a month, students join Equine Therapy & Horsemanship—part of our curriculum connecting head, heart, and hands.

This partnership with the Myrtle Beach Therapeutic Riding & Vaulting Club in Loris, SC, led by Ms. Amy and her team, helps students cultivate confidence, empathy, and balance.

Included in Tuition

Equine Adventure Days are included in tuition for MJA students. Community members and visitors are welcome to participate for a fee.

Students Learn:

Confidence through connection with horses

Empathy and gentle care for animals

Balance in body, mind, and spirit
